Where exactly is Greece, & what makes it so important & interesting to see?

Greece is the peninsula & archipelago (group of islands) just to the east of Italy (it’s the next country over that juts down into the Mediterranean/Aegean seas) in eastern Europe. Greece is often referred to the place “where east meets west”, & no truer statement could be said about Greece. Because it is ‘east meets west’, Greece has so many flavors & cultures that combine to make it an extremely interesting, unique & “exotic” country! The people are warm & friendly, & they love life & know how to enjoy it, making it a lot easier for you to do so when you visit! Greeks love Americans, as Greece is a long-time friend of the U.S., with reportedly close to as many Greeks living in the U.S. now than in Greece! (Our 33rd U.S. president Harry Truman is their hero, with a statue/monument to him in Greece for saving their country after WWII). The language is not a western alphabet… it’s GREEK, of course, but many folks also speak English, especially in the more visited areas & of course hotels & restaurants. Their predominant religion is Greek Orthodox (Christian), the vast majority of Greeks belonging to the Greek Orthodox church. (Similar to Catholicism in comparison, but without a pope). Easter is a huge celebration for weeks in Greece, a great time in the Spring to see festivals & enjoy a special time of celebration in Greece. And a special thing to say when celebrating? “OPA”!

Greece IS history. Greece is loaded with ancient, historical sites in Athens, across the countryside, & in her islands. There is really no place to go that isn’t historic! If you have already been to Italy, you will then appreciate Greece even more… why? Ancient Greece makes Italy’s historic sites seem YOUNG by comparison! Greece was the center of the ancient world long before the Roman Empire. From the prehistoric times thousands of years before Christ to the Cycladic, Minoan & Mycenaean cultures of the Bronze Age (3200-1200 B.C.), the 1525 B.C. volcanic eruption/destruction of Santorini (& widely-thought destruction of the fabled city of “Atlantis” in that region), the dark ages of Greece from 1200-800 B.C., the Archaic period of Greek revival from 800-500 B.C. that spawned new styles of warfare, art, athletics & politics as well as colonization of Italy, Egypt, Syria, the Black Sea, north Africa, & other areas (the first Olympic games held in this period at Olympia in 776 B.C.—where the Olympic flame still originates today!) to the Hellenistic period of Greece & on to Roman occupation & beyond, Greece has seen many eras & ages throughout history. Greece was also the birthplace & home to almost all of the well-known ancient poets, philosophers, mathematicians & scientists-- Homer, Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Pythagoras…all Greeks, many of their philosophies & influences endure in our society today. The father of western medicine, Hippocrates, was an Athenian. Even Egypt’s famous Queen Cleopatra was GREEK! Our lives in the western world are all influenced by Greece & its inhabitants, even to this day. How meaningful it will be to visit the country of so much world-changing persons, places & things that ARE Greece!

Top sites to see in & around Athens:

The Parthenon, ancient temple sitting atop the “rock” of the Acropolis, is Greece’s most famous landmark in the center of Athens & “bucket list” entry for most world travelers. Other top sites & spots to see in Athens are the Agora, National Archaeological Museum, Museum of Cycladic Art, Roman Forum & Tower of the Winds, Benaki Museum, Kerameikos, Byzantine Museum, Filopappos Hill, & the Temple of Olympian Zeus!

Some of the most popular items in Greek dishes are pork, lamb, chicken, fish, calamari, lobster, clams, crab, olives & olive oil, tomatoes, beans, garlic, mint & other herbs, figs, yogurt (Greek!), honey, eggs, a variety of fresh salads, asparagus, artichokes, cucumbers, eggplant, zucchini, capers, varieties of seeds & nuts (sesame, pistachio, walnut, pine nut, sunflower, pumpkin, chestnut), peaches, apricots, grapes, raisins, citrus fruits (oranges, lemons), rice, potatoes, & more. You can frequently get a good pizza, too!
